An open email to the powers that be at BART
As an American and specifically as a former Bay Area resident I was shocked to learn of the January 1, 2009 shooting of Oscar Grant by a BART police officer. This shooting of an unarmed man who presented no threat to the police officers or the public was witnessed and recorded by several people. In view of this it is only appropriate that the officers involved be taken off duty without pay while both a criminal investigation of the shooting including charges and possible prosecution as well as an independent investigation of the shooting that includes a review of training and hiring practices are conducted. As both an act of good faith and to prevent future tragedies of this kind BART should also establish an independent residents’ police review board.
