A city on a hill
Today the Massachusetts Legislature took the final vote that would determine whether the rights of a minority, rights granted under the state constitution and confirmed by the courts, should be subjected to mob rule at the ballot box to the end of writing discrimination into the oldest, still functioning written constitution in the world.
Today the Commonwealth of Massachusetts once again raises her head high and points the way that a nation struggling in the darkness of ignorance may find its way to the enlightening horizon and continue evolution into the dream of its own conception.
Today the Massachusetts Legislature defeated the ballot initiative by a vote of 151 to 44. Today in Massachusetts marriage equality and the principle of protection from the tyranny of the majority are secure. If history proves the rule eventually the nation will follow.
